Releasing energy blocks opens you to healing energy. Like removing the kinks from a garden hose to open the flow of water, releasing energy blocks opens you to the flow of love, connected to your divine source.
First, you have to learn to recognize the reactions that create energy blocks in your body. Any physical, emotional, or spiritual reaction you have is a trigger that you need to lean in and let go. This is your spiritual guidance system (SGS) and it assists you in recognizing when you need to release negative energy.
What is an energy block? Where do they come from? How does it affect your mind, body, and spirit?
When you harbor anger and resentment, worry excessively, absorb negative energy, or feel stressed, you block the flow of energy in your body. This reduces your ability to tap into the spiritual information through your heart center that you need to guide your life. When there are energy blocks in your body (and especially when those blocks are produced by negative patterns and thoughts), you become prone to dis-ease—including heart disease, weakening of the immune system, anxiety, and depression.
How do you recognize an energy block? Like little motion sensors, your body alerts you when you are experiencing an energy block. Such reactions tell you to pause, check in, and notice what needs to be healed. When you dig deeper, however, you find that underneath these reactions are usually feelings of insecurity, worthlessness, or lovelessness.
Here’s are some of the most common physical emotional, and spiritual energy blocks:
PHYSICAL: Physical reactions such as tightening in your chest, holding your breath, or clenching your jaw indicate that you are trying to suppress your emotional pain.
EMOTIONAL: Emotional reactions such as anger, irritation, anxiety, blame, defensiveness, or attack do the same. Avoidance or suppression is another way of blocking the pain of hurt, sadness, and shame.
SPIRITUAL: Spiritual reactions include resistance to change; fear of letting go; staying in your comfort zone; holding on to old patterns, mindsets, or stuff; shutting down your natural intuitive abilities; using distractions or addictions to escape; or feeling out of alignment with spirit.
I know that when the pitch of my voice becomes higher, like a young girl’s, I am experiencing an energy block relating to some past emotional issue. This cue tells me I need to pause, open my heart, and go within to discover what I am afraid of expressing and what needs to be healed.
Here’s a three-step spiritual process for recognizing and releasing energy blocks:
- Take time alone and do a quick body scan: Begin at the top of your head and move slowly down to your feet. Notice where in your body you are holding any tightness or tension. Ask your body what are you are holding onto here? Journal you’re the answers. Begin with five minutes at the beginning and end of each day, then gradually increase the time.
- Practice deep, slow, intentional breathing for release: While sitting or walking, practice using your breath for release. Breathe in love and direct it to the parts of your body that feels tight and holding negative energy, breathe out fear. Do this until your breath is rhythmic, and you feel calm and centered. You draw more oxygen into your body which assists you in recognizing and releasing energy blocks. A regular breathing practice will help you remain clear on a daily basis, and release past blocks as well.
- Notice when you feel unsettled, restless, or irritable: These are cues for you that something needs to be brought into your awareness. Do a quick body scan and notice where your body is holding tension and tightness. What is the energy in your body telling you? What physical or emotional triggers/reactions did you observe today? What people or situations triggered these reactions? Is there a pattern to your reactions? Sit with your feelings until you feel them surface. Write about your experience is in your journal.
Through releasing energy blocks, we can open ourselves to the flow of divine energy for increased health and happiness.
