If you are suffering from anxiety, you are most likely disconnected from your heart space. To find your way back to inner peace, you must come home to your heart, the seat of your trust, inner wisdom, and spiritual truth. By focusing on your heart and bringing your attention here, you move into present awareness. This is where compassion, acceptance, and trust in yourself and your divine source live. In fact, anxiety and fear cannot co-exist in the same space.
When you drop into your heart space, you remain grounded like the eye at the center of a tornado even as anxious thoughts spiral through your mind. Just by bringing your attention from your head to your heart, you create calm and balance in your nervous system. Focusing your attention at your heart doesn’t just calm an anxiety-ridden brain and nervous system; it also brings your body, mind, and spirit into energetic balance and alignment with your soul’s path.
Mystics, spiritual leaders, and healers have long known that the heart center is the gateway to wisdom and well-being. This is evident in images of saints, sages, and Christ, all of whom are depicted with open, shining hearts. Helen Keller once wrote, “The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart.” Her words have become even more meaningful to me as I have gained awareness of the scientific research emerging about “heart intelligence.”
Heart intelligence, as defined by the Institute of HeartMath, is “the flow of awareness, understanding, and intuition we experience when the mind and emotions are brought into coherent alignment with the heart…Heart intelligence underlies cellular organization and guides and evolves organisms toward increased order, awareness and coherence of their bodies’ systems.” According to the Institute of HeartMath, heart coherence is a scientifically verified state in which our brains and hearts resonate and exchange information. In fact, the heart center even has its own measurable wave signature.
What this means in daily life is that, when your mind and emotions are in alignment with your heart, you come into present awareness. This creates a more consistent flow of energy which allows you to intuit freely. When you are in this flow, you bypass the chatter of the brain, and instead tap into the positive energy flow of your heart center which brings clarity, calm, and centeredness.
Remember anxiety is an emotion that is triggered by your brain, the thoughts in your head. It’s like a computer that can scan, access, and store data, but it can’t tap into creational, experiential, or present-centered energies. Your head views life from the perspective of the past or future. This is where anxiety exists. So, when you’re in fear, anxiety, or self-doubt, you are either worrying about the past (choices you’ve already made) or the future (choices you’ve no control over).
Just by bringing your attention from your head to your heart, you create a calm and peaceful shift in your energies. You actually bring yourself into present awareness where you can connect to your core self.
Let’s practice heart-centered attention: Close your eyes and place your hand on the center of your chest. Now put your attention at your heart center. You can tap your fingers on your heart space to stimulate the energy here. Take a few deep breaths while inhaling and exhaling through your heart. Now focus on your heart by visualizing a pearl of while light here. Feel the light filling your entire heart space and expanding outward in all directions. Pause and notice how you feel. Do you feel a shift in your energies? Just practicing this can start to calm your anxiety in any given moment.
You can practice heart-centered attention to calm your anxiety when you’re in traffic, at the grocery store, or in a tense situation at work. There are also several cell phone apps that have breathing exercises and guided meditations such as “Calm,” “Head Space,” and “Insight Timer,” that you can download as well.
